Fear of Falling

Fear of Falling

@BRUTUS21:00 - 02:00

During Museumnacht010, Brutus Art Space shows Fear of Falling, the new exhibition by Carlijn Kingma. She is an artist and cartographer who draws not countries, but the invisible systems of our society. With her detailed works, she makes complex themes like the monetary system and the housing market tangible. She combines art with in-depth journalism and poses the crucial question: how do we want to shape our shared future?

In the exhibition Fear of Falling - a collaboration with Thomas Bollen of Follow the Money, among others - Kingma explores the existential fear of losing one's socio-economic position. She shows how this fear drives the middle class toward conservatism and how the ultra-rich exploit it. Kingma exposes the mechanisms behind growing inequality and searches for reforms that can free our democracy from the excessive "own-wellbeing-first" mentality.

Central to the exhibition is Kingma's latest work, The Machinery of Public Housing, in which she dissects the complex housing market. She maps the invisible forces and players and clearly demonstrates where the system is faltering and where there is room for repair.
