Another Island is a personal and poetic exhibition by Janilda Bartolomeu, a researcher and audiovisual artist. Using film and installations, she explores the dreams of the Cape Verdean diaspora. Bartolomeu suggests that wherever the diaspora settles, a new ‘island’ emerges. The cities of Rotterdam and Dakar, which have large Cape Verdean communities, are often seen as part of this extended archipelago.
The exhibition centres on the dreams, memories and imagination that connect the 12 Cape Verdean islands with their global communities. Bartolomeu explores the shared heritage of the Cape Verdean communities in Rotterdam and Dakar while also looking to a possible shared future.
